The Franciscan Museum preserves objects of every sort related to the Franciscan movement: sculptures, drawings, engravings, prints, illuminated manuscripts, ceramics, medals and other items. The main purpose of the foundation of the Museum was to assemble and document Franciscan history and art through items and images of every artistic category, starting with the iconography on St Francis of Assisi, then moving on to the Franciscan saints and blesseds and other significant personages. The older pieces in the Museum includes a colour plate with gold background by the master from Tuscany or Lazio, depicting Saint Francis of Assisi with the Rule. It dates back to the 13th century.

The government ministerial decree of 15 September 1965 formally registered it as “Minor, diocesan or religious museum No. 246”, categorising it as a non-state specialised museum.

The ample variety of documents, specimens, objects and images on display illustrates the entire span of the history and spirituality of the Franciscan movement and allows one to appreciate in all its multiple facets the richness of the religious cultural heritage of the followers of the Poverello of Assisi.

Prior appointment is required for visit to the Museum, which can be made by contacting the Director, Yohannes Teklemariam Bache.
