Sommario: Mario Fabiani da Mercato Saraceno (1512 ca.-1581), vicario generale e primo cronista dell'Ordine cappuccino, fu dotato anche di una versatilità poetica che gli consentiva di comporre versi con facilità. Nel corso del XX secolo sono stati pubblicati alcuni suoi versi, ma molti ancora ne restano da scoprire e pubblicare. Il carnet viene ora arricchito dal poemetto Alla Croce, che l'autore trae da un codice cartaceo del XVI secolo, vale a dire dal ms. 575 della Biblioteca Casanatense di Roma.

Summary: Mario Fabiani from Mercato Saraceno (ca. 1512-1581), vicar general and the first chronicler of the Capuchin Order, was also gifted with poetic versatility enabling him to compose verses with ease. Through the course of the twentieth century some of his verses have published, but many of them still remain to be unearthed and brought out. The compilation is now enriched by the short poem Alla Croce, which the author came by from a paper manuscript of the sixteenth century, namely, from MS. 575 Biblioteca Casanatense of Rome.

Vernon Wagner, The Mystery of Death according to St. Lawrence of Brindisi, 481-501
Summary: – For those without hope of resurrection to eternal life, death is the ultimate horror. It shows no partiality, for it robs both the rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick, the young and the old, of their most prized earthly possession. The only adequate explanation for its universality is the universal presence of sin. Death comes to all inasmuch as all have sinned. Death can be viewed as either physical death, spiritual death, or the second death of eternal estrangement from God. The causes of physical death can be reduced to illness, starvation, feeble old age, or external agents. The cause of spiritual death is sin which, if not repented, is also the cause of the second or eternal death. Death, however, also has many benefits. The fear of death is a powerful antidote against sin in this life, and death itself is the only way to resurrection and eternal life. For those who have lived their lives here on earth with a view to sharing in the resurrection of Christ, far from eliciting a horror of the judgment to follow, death is even desirable for it will bring the ultimate freedom of eternal life.

Benedict Vadakkekara, Capuchin General Minister Pacificus Carletti of Seggiano: on programmed mandate (1908-1914), 503-546
Summary: The occurrence on 22 October 2014 of the first centenary of the death of the Capuchin general Minister and bishop, Fr Pacificus Carletti of Seggiano, occasions the present study. The six-year period of his office as general Minister (1908-1914) saw the establishment of the Order's International College Rome (1908), the renewal of the Constitutions (1909), creation of a new spirit of equality and fraternity among the three first Orders of the Minorite family (1909), the reopening of the Museo Francescano (1913), the foundation of the mission magazine Il Massaia and the spread of the missionary spirit in the provinces and the Franciscan Tertiaries (1914). Though he died before he could be formally installed as the Bishop of Albenga (1914), the long-term effects of his decisions have had a determining effect on the life and history of the Capuchin Order.

Sommario: Il presente studio prende corpo nel primo centenario della morte del predicatore apostolico, ministro generale dell'Ordine dei Cappuccini e vescovo di Albenga, P. Pacifico Carletti da Seggiano il 22 ottobre 2014. Pregi del sessennio del suo ufficio di ministro generale (1908-1914) risultano l'istituzione del Collegio Internazionale dell'Ordine a Roma (1908), il rinnovamento delle Costituzioni (1909), la creazione di un nuovo spirito di uguaglianza e di fraternità tra i primi tre Ordini francescani (1909), la riapertura del Museo Francescano a Roma (1913), la fondazione della rivista missionaria Il Massaia, la diffusione dello spirito missionario tra i frati e l'estensione della collaborazione con i terziari francescani (1914). Morì prima di poter essere formalmente insediato come Vescovo di Albenga (1914). Gli effetti a lungo termine delle sue decisioni come ministro generale sono ancora riconoscibili nella storia e nella vita dell'Ordine cappuccino.

Sommario: L'articolo prende lo spunto da una serie di memorie, relazioni, lettere e testimonianze manoscritte, rintracciate nell'archivio provinciale dei cappuccini delle Marche. Sono testimonianze di confratelli missionari sulla personalità, il lavoro apostolico e sociale, la predicazione, le missioni e l'insegnamento del catechismo che, con metodi nuovi e diuturno impegno, p. Giuseppe da Monsano attuò in tutti i centri parrocchiali, nei villaggi e nelle scuole pubbliche, durante i suoi 52 anni di missione. Tali memorie si aggiungono alle notizie di una breve biografia in lingua portoghese, di Antônio Lima dos Santos, uscita a Salvator-Bahia nel 1986.

Summary: The article is based on a series of memoirs, reports, letters and eye-witness accounts by Capuchin missionaries, now preserved in the archives of the Capuchin Province of Marche, bringing out the personality, social and apostolic work, preaching and catechesis of their confrere Giuseppe da Monsano. A short biography of his in Portuguese by Antônio Lima dos Santos (1986) has also proved handy for this study. During the 52 years of his missionary life Giuseppe adopted a very down-to-earth and innovative method of catechesis. It unfolded in numerous parish centres, villages and public schools and involved scores of catechists.

Monica Benedetta Umiker, I volgarizzamenti della "Vita" di s. Chiara d'Assisi: La tradizione manoscritta, 599-639
Sommario: Il presente lavoro raccoglie le prime Vite di s. Chiara d'Assisi scritte in lingua volgare (secc. XIV-XVI) nell'Europa allora conosciuta. Si tratta prevalentemente di traduzioni dalla legenda ufficiale latina Admirabilis femina di Tommaso da Celano, o di composizioni più brevi, sia dipendenti dalla legenda ufficiale o da una delle legende minori latine usate nella Liturgia, sia di opere a sé stanti. Si è cercato di presentare e descrivere i codici che contengono tali Vite attraverso una suddivisione secondo le aree linguistiche, con l'indicazione – dove questo era possibile – della provenienza e della bibliografia relativa a ogni Vita.

Summary: The present work brings together the first Lives of St Clare of Assisi written in the vernaculars (14th –16th cents) of the then known Europe. This involves mainly the translations from the official Latin legend Admirabilis femina of Thomas of Celano or shorter compositions, whether depending on the official legend or on one of the minor legends in Latin used in the liturgy. They could also have been independent works. It is an attempt to present and describe the codices that contain such lives grouped together according to the linguistic areas, with the indication – where this is possible – of the provenience, and the bibliography on each Life.

Sommario: Vengono pubblicate dieci leggende liturgiche relative a sant'Elisabetta d'Ungheria. Si tratta di testi latini provenienti dai breviari e leggendari conservati in alcuni codici manoscritti medievali. La ricerca, che è ancora in una fase iniziale, si è svolta soprattutto nelle raccolte della Biblioteca Universitaria di Breslavia (Wrocław in Polonia) e in quelle della Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. Tra i testi editi troviamo: la leggenda della curia pontificia Vas admirabile nelle sue varie forme e abbreviazioni (testi 1-4); tre leggende derivanti dalla Legenda Aurea di Iacopo da Varazze (5-7); due redazioni della leggenda con l'incipit Fuit igitur secundum genus seculi... (8-9), composta al più tardi nell'ultimo decennio del XIII secolo; e un'originale leggenda contenuta nel breviario delle clarisse di Wrocław, databile alla metà del XIII secolo.

Summary: The study offers ten liturgical texts in Latin about St Elizabeth of Hungary taken from breviaries and legendaries preserved in some medieval MSS. The research, which is still at an early stage, was carried out mainly in the collections of the University Library of Breslau (Wrocław, Poland) and in those of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. The texts published are: the legend of the papal curia Vas admirabile in its various forms and abbreviations (texts 1-4), three legends from Jacobus de Varagine's Legenda Aurea (5-7); two versions of the legend with the opening words Fuit igitur secundum genus seculi... (8-9), composed after the last decade of the 13th century, and an original legend contained in the breviary of the Poor Clares of Wrocław, dating back to mid-13th century.

Kees van Dooren, Saint Francis as "alter Christus": Galle's Series on the Life of Francis of Assisi, 705-742
Summary: Between 1570 and 1587 the Antwerp editor Philip Galle published two influential editions of a series of prints dedicated to the life of Francis of Assisi. Until recently it was believed that the first edition, discovered in 1977 by Fr Servus Gieben, was an initiative from a lay benefactor of the Franciscan order. This interpretation was based mainly on the 'weird' iconography of two of the plates. The present study is dedicated to showing that both these plates and the rest of the series were inspired by a classic Franciscan source, namely Pisanus' Liber de conformitate. In the series, Pisanus' main theme, the exaltation of Francis as alter Christus is linked to the ambitious claims regarding the role of the Franciscan order in the history of salvation. This suggests that the iconographical program of the series was probably crafted by a Franciscan friar. The author holds that the second edition of the series was launched to get the same message across in a more convincing way. This becomes evident from the fact that, firstly, all the captions in the plates were renewed, while the two enigmatic plates mentioned above were cancelled, and secondly, Fr Hendrik Sedulius, the editor of the series, introduced a very original new plate seemingly representing Pisanus' main theme of interpreting Francis as alter Christus. The addition of a plate showing other Franciscan saints appears to evoke the transmission of Francis' sanctity to his order. The author opines that both the editions of the series may be considered as typical examples of propaganda material for the order.
