L'Istituto Storico dei Cappuccini, è un'istituzione di ricerca scientifica impegnata nell'investigazione storica e nello studio del francescanesimo, in modo particolare della riforma dei Cappuccini (sec. XVI), nelle sue diverse espressioni, approfondendone la dimensione storica, dottrinale, spirituale e iconografica.
L'Istituto Storico è una fraternità internazionale sotto l'immediata dipendenza del Ministro Generale dell'Ordine dei Frati Minori Cappuccini e, in quanto tale, è regolato dalle Costituzioni e da un proprio Statuto.
L'Istituto Storico dei cappuccini nacque il 14 novembre 1930 ad Assisi col nome di "Collegio di S. Lorenzo da Brindisi in Assisi" e fu trasferito a Roma nel 1940 sotto la denominazione che sarà poi definitiva di Istituto Storico dei Frati Minori Cappuccini, prima nella sede di Via Sicilia - Via Boncompagni e dall'estate del 1968 nell'attuale sede sul Grande Raccordo Anulare, km 65.050, dove sono stati trasferiti anche l'Archivio generale, il Museo francescano, il Collegio Internazionale San Lorenzo da Brindisi e la Biblioteca centrale dell'Ordine.
The Historical Institute of the Capuchins has the following dual purpose: 1. scientific research and the publication of works in the Franciscan field, especially concerning the Capuchins (16th century), in its various expressions developing its historical, doctrinal, spiritual and iconographic dimensions; for this end, the Institute brings out the periodical Collectanea Franciscana and its annual supplement the Bibliographia Franciscana. 2. The promotion, according to its possibilities, of cultural initiatives that concern the life of the Capuchin Orde). The Institute is an international fraternity and is under the immediate dependence on the Capuchin General Minister and, as such, is regulated by the Order’s Constitutions and its own Statutes.
The Historical Institute of the Capuchins was started on 14 November 1930 in Assisi with the name of “Collegio Internazionale San Lorenzo da Brindisi”; it was shifted to Rome in 1940 under the name that would become definitive as the Historical Institute of the Capuchin Friars Minor. In Rome, it was first headquartered in Via Sicilia - Via Boncompagni and since the summer of 1968 in the present location on the Grande Raccordo Anulare, Km 65,050, where the Order’s General Archives, the Franciscan Museum, the Collegio Internazionale San Lorenzo da Brindisi and the Central Library are also housed.
